Berwick Camp A Night at the Races - Amy Bonis
On Tuesday night Mr Sloan had told us that we’re going to play a game called ‘Night at the Races’.
“It’s a game where we used small cardboard horses. They have a whole in there saddle, because we are going to have a string through the hole.
One end of the string was going to be tied to a chair at the wall, while a student who is now the jockey, holds the other end at the start as well as the horse.
They put the string on an angle so they can shake the string and the horse will go down much better with the help of gravity and touch the chair first, and win.
There were five horses with number, one, two, three, four and five.”
“All students were given five lollies each.
You were allowed to join with other people and you were also allowed to ear your lollies but had to of bet at least one of your lollies on one of the races. If you bet and that horse wins you get back double of what you bet. Example: If you bet three on number one, and that horse wins, you get six lollies back”
When Mr Sloan had finished explaining and we had gotten our lollies, and had bet the horses were off and on their way to the finish line,
Everyone was shouting go number three! Go number four! Go number one! Go number five! And go number two! I was shouting go number two! Because I had placed a bet on number two, whose jockey was Bree. Bree won! But during the race she had steeped over the line so they had to have a replay. And on the replay Bree didn’t win! And so I didn’t get any money back and I had eaten the rest so I had just watched and talked to my friends. After a while Fe and I asked Mr Sloan if we could go back to our bunkroom because we were tired. He said yes and so we had gone back to our cabin.
